The “Right Size” Home

Work hard, buy a home, start a family and continue to upgrade your home until everyone has enough room. This has been the blueprint for lots of homeowners for the last fifty years but there is certainly a shift in thinking that could change all of that.

Interestingly, Americans live in much larger homes than most people in other countries throughout the world. The U.S. Census reported in 2006 that the average single family home completed had 2,469 square feet which was 769 feet more than in 1976.

Once the children are grown and have moved out, homeowners are finding they have too much room. Even if their home is paid for, they have higher property taxes, insurance, utilities and maintenance on the larger home than they’d have if they were living in the “right size” home.

Some homeowners state thaty they’re keeping their larger home because it has luxury features that smaller homes don’t have. There’s a movement that seems to have started in the United States to find the “right size” home with the amenities and convenience that homeowners want.

This philosophy has been expressed by Sarah Susanka in her book Creating the Not So Big House. It proposes a house that “values quality over quantity with an emphasis on comfort and beauty, a high level of detail, and a floor plan designed for today’s informal lifestyle.”

Grove Theater Hosts Simulcast for Leaders and Businesses

OAK RIDGE, TN—High Places Community Church and Friends of The Grove Theater will host a fundraising concert on behalf of the Alexander Inn. The show is set for February 17th at 7PM at the Historic Grove Theater.  Native Oak Ridgers Lee Younger and the band Count This Penny will perform.

The Alexander Inn is in Jackson Square, and has been empty since the mid-1990s. Many Oak Ridge residents remember the glory days of the Inn in the 1940’s as well as the famous people who stayed there through the years—General Groves, Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, and President John F. Kennedy.  Historic scenes at the Inn have included ballroom dancing, fine dining, community meetings, and wedding receptions.  Recently, the thriller-penning team Jefferson Bass included a glimpse of the Inn in their Oak Ridge-based novel, Bones of Betrayal.

The nonprofit group Oak Ridge Revitalization Effort is working to raise funds for the Inn to stabilize its future and allow the community to have input in shaping that future. ORRE’s larger mission is the revitalization of Oak Ridge’s historic centers and their surrounding neighborhoods.  http://www.revitalizeoakridge.org/  for more info & how to support.

Organizers are thrilled to be part of a show that will bring friends and family together in their shared hometown in support of this important effort.  The Historic Grove Theater is another Oak Ridge institution that was once given up for dead until it was purchased by High Places Church it in February 2004.   It is now a thriving space that serves the community as a rehearsal and performance venue for Sound Company, the Oak Ridge Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Dance With Me children’s dance group, and as a home for musical performances and community gatherings.

Lee Younger will open the “Save the Inn” show with beautiful songs about family and faith. Count This Penny will perform as a duo, bringing their harmony-laden Appalachian pop songs back for a special visit to Oak Ridge from their current home in Madison, Wisconsin. Q: What are the new trends in remodeling?

A: Since December, there has been an upswing in remodeling nationwide according to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). The cost of a remodel is running about 10 to 15% less than two years ago. In general, NARI reports that the project size is smaller.

Instead of expanding your home, consider borrowing space from oversized rooms. Instead of building a wine room, install a wine storage appliance. Instead of creating a separate home theater in the basement, avoid the cost of expensive electronics and make a multipurpose room.

Got any home improvement plans lined up for the New Year? The following online programs are free and offer a great way to design your home projects before you start:

  • Autodesk Homestyler is created by the same company that makes AutoCAD architectural software. This robust, easy-to-use application lets you arrange and design your project by simply dragging and dropping elements such as windows and doors, furniture and appliances.
  • Google Sketchup is a sophisticated software application that lets you build 3D models of your home. Online video tutorials will help you get started. Users can upload their creations to a shared database where you can peruse others’ works for inspiration.
  • Ikea Planner lets you build a room and furnish it with Ikea products.

For minor upgrades such as new flooring and paint colors, try these online resources.

  • With Colorjive you can upload a photo of the room you want and try on new color schemes. Adjust lighting conditions then process your image to obtain the color index numbers for Sherman Williams and Benjamin Moore paints.
  • Daltile’s website lets you design your own project, select and arrange coordinating tiles, and tally up the final price of your project.
  • Armstrong Flooring displays stock photos demonstrating a number of flooring options from laminates to hardwood.
